Hours before doors were even scheduled to open, Lil Xan fans trickled in line in front of Mod Club Theatre in Toronto in anticipation of catching a glimpse of the SoundCloud rapper from his tour van parked in front of the venue, and to secure a coveted spot by the stage. Audience members generally consisted of teenage girls decked out in camo pants, colourful hoodies and Xanarchy merchandise, which rose to fame as an ironic "anti-xan" movement following the sudden death of emo-rap pioneer Lil Peep.
Fellow Xanarchy member $teven Cannon opened the stage hyping up the crowd with a 30 minute set including "Inxanity" and "Crash The Whip" which both have well over 2 million streams on Spotify, each. By the time Lil Xan joined on stage, the crowd was already going nuts. The rapper performed some of his most popular songs including "Xanarchy," "Been Bout It" and "Slingshot" before doing "Betrayed," twice, as an encore. As a treat for the crowd, Lil Xan also performed a cover of "Beamer Boy" by Lil Peep as a tribute. Climbing the bar stools, side stage, basically anything that will give them a slight upper hand for the chance to touch the hand of either rapper who made sure to engage with their fans throughout the set. Those who are from or have visited Toronto this winter know that frigid is just an understatement. Thankfully Silverstein, who brought along Picturesque, Broadside and fellow Toronto natives Selfish Things, took the stage on Thursday night to turn up the heat for Stay Warm Festival at the Danforth Music Hall. Fans trekked from all across Ontario, from Hamilton to Barrie. A few of them, who arrived at the venue promptly at the venue to claim a front row spot at the barriers, gushed about how Silverstein's distinctive sound served as a soundtrack throughout middle school and high school, a tough few years for most in terms of self discovery. With 8 studio albums and an impressive track record of tours, including the Vans Warped Tour, Silverstein has served as a Canadian punk/hardcore icon for almost two decades. Selfish Things preparing the crowd for Silverstein. Lead singer, Alex Biro admitted that he is performing barefoot because he lost a bet. Some photos from their set down below: Although Tonight Alive was unfortunately not able to make it on the Toronto stop, Silverstein still delivered nonetheless with a double header set, including playing their entire "Discovering the Waterfront" album and their Greatest Hits. Their set captivated fans from the first beat to the last, decorated with plenty of strobe lights and a backdrop with their name and logo. Check out the stills from the set below:
Gabrielle Aplin returned to Toronto last night for a sold out show at The Velvet Underground, the first stop on her North American Tour. Fans were lined up down the block and around the corner eager to get in, a lot like the last time she performed a sold out show at El Mocambo four years ago. The night began with John Splithoff taking the stage where he performed hits such as Sing to You and Show Me. The New York native engaged the audience in some sing-alongs and prepared them for the night of music. Shortly after, Hudson Taylor took the stage, the brothers from Dublin performed fan favourites such as Chasing Rubies and Run with Me. As Gabrielle Aplin took the stage, the crowd was packing in an eager to hear her performance. Her set began with Night Bus, from her newest EP Miss You. After releasing her solo debut album last year as Bedouine, she put on a beautiful and ornate performance in front of a sold-out crowd. A performance full of fairy-tale whimsical strums lit with a single spotlight, a candle on the side and water in a wine glass, Bedouine created an atmosphere that resembled a daydream. A break in performance allowed some audience interaction, Bedouine introduced a new song that has no name and asked the audience to pitch some song titles after the performance. As a hint to a new song release, some of the recommendations included "Sunshine Sunshine", "Lazy Baby", and "Wildflower."
Keep an eye out for Bedouine if she visits your city, she is definitely an act that you want to see in person. Charlotte Cardin visited Toronto while on tour supporting Børns on his 2018 tour.
